The Original (1972-73):
The “Broad Street Bullies” was a nickname given to the Philadelphia Flyers by Jack Chevalier and Pete Cafone in the Philadelphia Bulletin on January 3, 1973. The nickname was given to the Flyers based on their brawling ways. The name stuck until one of their enforcers, Dave Schultz was traded to the Los Angeles Kings during the 1976-77 season.
The New Bullies (2007-08)
During this season, four Philadelphia Flyers have been suspended because of illegal play.
- Steve Downie (20-game suspension) on a hit to the head of the Ottawa Senators’ Dean McAmmond
- Jesse Boulerice (25-game suspension) for hitting the Vancouver Canucks’ Ryan Kesler in the face with a stick
- Randy Jones (2-game suspension) for checking Boston Bruins’ player Patrice Bergeron face-first into the boards
- Scott Hartnell (2-game suspension) for checking Boston Bruins’ player Andrew Alberts in the head
Hartnell’s suspension is the latest, occurring on Tuesday.
The Philadelphia Flyers have only won two Stanley Cups in their history. Both came during “The Original” Broad Street Bully Era (1973-74 and 1974-75).
Could this be a push for take three?
Check back for the next suspension.
