Word of Mouth: A Lawyer for Brian McNamee

January 3, 2008
“He’s got a chance to protect himself. We’re not going to sue
him if he doesn’t do it. But if he does it, we’re going to sue him.”

- Richard D. Emery, a lawyer of Brian McNamee, on suing
Roger Clemens if he says Mcnamee is lying on ’60 Minutes’

This could get interesting quick.

Word of Mouth: Tom Coughlin

December 29, 2007
“Our objective is to win.”

-New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin,
on his team’s game against the Patriots this evening.

I’m glad the Patriots are going to have to work for perfection, but doesn’t Coughlin realize that every team’s objective has been to win for 15 games running?

Word of Mouth: Marty Schottenheimer

December 22, 2007
“I have not heard a word from anybody
about anything relating to the Falcons.”

-Former Chargers’ Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer,
on the apparent interest in him coaching by the Atlanta Falcons

Marty Schottenheimer was fired in 2006 after leading the Chargers to a record of 14-2 but lost early in the playoffs. This is a man who knows how to win.

If anyone could turn this franchise around, it just may be him.

And if not, hey, they could always move to NFL Europe.

Word of Mouth: Roger Clemens

December 19, 2007
“I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take
steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances
at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life. Those
substances represent a dangerous and destructive
shortcut that no athlete should ever take.”

- Roger Clemens, in response to accusations
stemming from the Mitchell report.

Weird. So you’re telling me that ex-trainer Brian McNamee was telling the absolute truth about Andy Pettitte (Pettitte admitted he did take hGH), but he was completely lying about you.

Doesn’t seem to add up, Rodgoid.

Word of Mouth: Alex Rodriguez

December 17, 2007
“Not right now.”

- Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez on ’60 Minutes,’ in
response to whether or not he and Scott Boras are on speaking terms

And with A-Rod’s new ten year contract, they may never have to speak again.

Good riddance.

Word of Mouth: Trey Hillman

December 4, 2007
“All you have to do is look at the numbers over the last
10 years and if we were to have that bat, it would certainly help.”

- New Royals’ Manager Trey Hillman, on the potential
of signing free agent center fielder Andruw Jones

Wait, so the Royals are trying to get a good player?

Word of Mouth: Ricky Williams

November 17, 2007
“I’m at a place now where it’s easier for me to appreciate
being a football player. I hated being a football player before.”

-RB Ricky Williams, on his return to the Miami Dolphins

If Ricky can stay away from the drugs, he might lead the Dolphins to what has become their sad goal for 2007:

A win.

Word of Mouth: John Sterling on Alex Rodriguez

November 14, 2007
“John, on a scale of 1 to 100, it’s at 101.”

-Yankees’ Commentator John Sterling quoting his source (someone close
to Alex Rodriguez), on the chances of A-Rod coming back to the Yankees

Word of Mouth: Peyton Manning

November 12, 2007
“Usually, you have that many turnovers, throw that
many interceptions, you usually don’t have much of a chance.”

-Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning, after
his team’s 23-21 to the Chargers last night

Colts Turnovers: 6
Manning’s Interceptions: 6

Peyton Manning, who is used to breaking records, broke the franchise record for interceptions in last night’s loss. The 6 picks were also the most in a game since the 2004 season.

Usually labeled as one of the top two quarterbacks in the league (with Patriots’ QB Tom Brady), last night’s play really didn’t help Manning’s cause as the top dog.

On top of that, the Colts might not even be among the top three teams in the league anymore:

Patriots (9-0)
Cowboys (8-1)
Packers (8-1)
Steelers (7-2)

Colts
(7-2)

Just goes to show, a lot can change on any given Sunday.

Word of Mouth: Eric Dickerson

November 10, 2007
“He has a good shot at doing it. I hope he doesn’t, to be honest.
You want those records as long as you can. That’s part of having the
record, your name gets brought up, and it’s great for him and it’s great for me.”

- Former NFL Player Eric Dickerson, on current Vikings RB
Adrian Peterson’s chances on breaking his rookie rushing record.

The Record
1983: 1,808 yards with the Los Angeles Rams

Adrian Peterson (Through 8 games)
2007: 1,036 yards with the Minnesota Vikings

Peterson Pace: 2,072 yards

So for Peterson, staying on pace would get him the record. However, now he has the fact that Eric Dickerson isn’t rooting for him to think about.

Scary.
